“I firmly believe in small gestures: pay for their coffee, hold the door for strangers, over tip, smile or try to be kind even when you don’t feel like it, pay compliments, chase the kid’s runaway ball down the sidewalk and throw it back to him, try to be larger than you are— particularly when it’s difficult. People do notice, people appreciate. I appreciate it when it’s done to (for) me. Small gestures can be an effort, or actually go against our grain (“I’m not a big one for paying compliments…”), but the irony is that almost every time you make them, you feel better about yourself. For a moment life suddenly feels lighter, a bit more Gene Kelly dancing in the rain.”

The Dundies is the most important awards ceremony of our times.

There. We said it. And it felt good.

You can have your Oscars and your Tonys and your Westminster Dog Shows. Dunder-Mifflin’s annual award ceremony honoring excellence in showing up to your job is the most relatable awards show you will ever see on television. Oh, sure, it may seem like just another cheesy event that everyone attends because it’s a big deal to Michael Scott. They’ll share some tasty Chili’s apps and a couple of drinks (and maybe even a few “second drinks.”) and then go home, but the Dundies ended up representing so much more than that.

Whereas, at first glance, the awards seemed to be insulting toward the employees (except for six time “Hottest in the Office”-winner Ryan Howard), they ended up allowing the staff to not take themselves so seriously. When outsiders mocked Michael trying to conduct the Dundies, his staff took that as an attack upon their work family, rallying them to complete the ceremony with honor.

By the time we saw the Dundies a second time, Michael was in the process of passing the torch to Deangelo Vickers, and the ceremony had evolved so much since we had last seen it… fancy restaurant, everyone dressed up… It even had a pre-filmed opening ceremony. Michael treated it as special because he was celebrating his employees (and living out his Hollywood dreams, but at least it was for staff morale), who by then cherished (or increasingly tolerated) the annual event. They were feting the very family they had become at the office. But Deangelo couldn’t handle the pressure of the annual employee appreciation ceremony, which strongly foreshadowed his fate. Ultimately, however, it was demonstrative of how much Michael loved Dunder-Mifflin and all of his employees, and they him.

So with that we give this special Dundie to the, um, Dundies, for celebrating us, the common office worker. We raise our second drink to you, after which we will no doubt be thrown out for being belligerent and drunk, but loved.
